Jamie Kennedy Talks Don’t Suck

Screen Rant : I love this film , Don’t Suck . It is not what I expect it to be . It has a pile more existent , devout moments in this film . Rick D’Elia wrote this film . He ’s a fantastical comic himself . What attracted you to the book ?

Jamie Kennedy : precisely how you felt , like it should n’t be this good . I could n’t believe it . The original title was called Two Pint Minimum , and when I project it , I ’m like , " This is so corny . " And that was the only corny matter about the hand . The min I get going reading it , I ’m like , " This is funny . " It ’s really mirthful . It ’s really real , and then it ’s a bizarre idea , but it could be credible the fashion it ’s played . And it was original , so I thought , " I beget it to give this a shot . "

Yeah . Listen , I think the one matter that I found the most fascinating about this is that stand - up comedian , just by nature , are really out there characters , a lot of them — and this kind of captured that absolutely . You represent stand - up comic Pete Brennan . Could you describe the theatrical role a little bit in the film ?

Scarlett Johansson as Zora Bennett in Jurassic World Rebirth

Jamie Kennedy : He ’s basically a lifer comedian , somebody who ’s been doing it for 30 age , never really got over the hump , plays every infernal region gig from here to Tacoma and back and just is a really respected comedian in the community , but just never really break through . And there ’s a tidy sum of masses we know like that , some really good ones . I mean , I think Rick is a very successful comedian , but he is one of these great comedians that people do n’t gain … He ’s just not as known , but he ’s brilliant . Jimmy Shubert , another one , superb comic . So it ’s a very relatable character , you have a go at it what I intend ? And then we have all different types in it .

Absolutely . And one of those dissimilar type is Matt Rife , who ’s fantastic as Ethan , the comedian vampire . This character should not act upon , but he is utterly fantastic in this role , and you just trust it the more and more the photographic film run on . Talk to me about working with Matt on this role .

Jamie Kennedy : I opine Matt , there ’s something about him that is other worldly . And when we shot this , it was like give him … Him taking a chance with us . It was his first lead , I believe . I ’m not sure , but I believe it was his first leash . And there ’s something just so otherworldly about him , and now it ’s distinctly everyone else is seeing what we see . He ’s just a alone … If you attend at him , he ’s unequalled . If you listen to him , he ’s singular . His psyche is unique . I mean , he ’s so quick off the dome .

Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt staring at the key in Mission Impossible The Final Reckoning

I do n’t think citizenry realize how hard that is . So he looks like a twilight character , but yet he has the razor shrewd mind of the best comedians . That ’s a crazy combination . And I believe him . The way he play it , I believe it . It ’s like , " Is he English ? Is he just really American ? " Madonna had that accent . It ’s like that . It ’s just a really prissy , right English . It ’s a really good role , and he ’s great in it .

Something else I loved about this photographic film too is it almost feels like a comedian , buddy road trip as they ’re going from venue to venue and townspeople to townsfolk . How much of that is kind of based on literal life ? I know that plainly he ’s a vampire , and he ’s not a vampire in literal living , but I ’m just let the cat out of the bag about two comedians going on the route together and go to dissimilar venues . How much of that is ground around Rick ’s real aliveness ?

Jamie Kennedy : Oh , I think it ’s all based on his real life story . I think all of it ’s true . A comedian dating a local , having his girlfriend from the baseball club , and then going on the road and just travel with your pal and getting an undoer and making them do all the work and break from metropolis to metropolis , and blaze spear to hell gig . It ’s like , " Oh my God , what am I doing ? " It ’s crazy because it ’s a world that I know so well , and I ’m like , " Are people going to empathize this tuner scene ? " But the radio panorama plays so well because it ’s good , but it ’s real .

don’t suck jamie kennedy interview

It ’s like that ’s what really come about . You ’re stagnant to the world . You meet some chipper young intern , and then you meet these DJs , and then as before long as off the air , it ’s unlike . So it ’s a piece of our animation that ’s so real , but it ’s different than Entourage , but that ’s why Entourage worked , because it was just unique , but it was order … It ’s like , " Oh , this is a nerveless world , " and this is what this is .

Yeah , utterly . Every time that we experience to see the behind the curtain stuff with the comedians , I felt like I was a fly front on a rampart just kind listening to these comedian kind of dog on each other and talk about their sets . It was fantastic . You touched a little bit on the kinship that Pete has with Stephanie , play by Ellen Hollman . Can you speak about that relationship a small bit ?

Jamie Kennedy : Yeah . I mean , it ’s his girlfriend . He ’s been with her for geezerhood . He has n’t confide . She ’s like , " You do n’t reckon I see the slags that talked on the road ? " I mean , all that ’s very literal . I think of , comics , if you ’re in a relationship , that ’s one thing , but if you ’re on the road a slew , your significant other can get very annoyed at that very apace .

Don’t Suck

So relationship get tested , but she also grounds him , and she ’s great at keeping him substantial . And it ’s like that ’s the route , this is your lifespan . And she works in the business , so she knows . But it ’s a very on-key thing . I mean , all of this is base in very realness . The vampire part is n’t , but it could be . It could be a metaphor . You do n’t nurse , blow on stagecoach . They suck the life out of you . We suck , and all this stuff .

Yeah , I mean , I think it ’s such a bright write and execute film . Now , what are Pete ’s initial mentation on Ethan ’s lamia morsel before he gets to sleep with him ?

Jamie Kennedy : He thinks it ’s stupid . He thinks it ’s a gimmick . He ’s like , " What is this ? A cat ’s out there … " It ’s a near gimmick , but it ’s like , " Okay , it ’s just stupefied . You ’re not being real . " And then it ’s actually the most brainy matter ever because he is being existent . He ’s being who he is . He ’s being a lamia , just no one would ever believe it . And it ’s like , in a way , what you think is a taxicab gimmick becomes the most original voice in comedy and squander up . And the movie , it ’s a metaphor for things , but it ’s unbelievable .

Don’t Suck

I love the relationship between Pete and Ethan . specially when we ’re on the road trip , we see this literal bond that ’s formed . First , it ’s awkward , but then it becomes a material friendship . Can you verbalize about how we explore that kinship throughout the film ?

Jamie Kennedy : Well , you see him , Pete ’s just like a veteran dog , and then he meets this guy , and you always will satisfy openers . That ’s real . And then there ’s people that are like , " I ’ll do anything to open up for you . " And that ’s true too . mass will do it . They ’ll carry your luggage , they ’ll give you tags , they ’ll betray your merch , but they ’ll never pay you . Usually they ’ll drive and clobber , but they wo n’t pay you their money and then pay you . It ’s like , " Whoa , what the the pits is that ? "

So then he does it , and then he realizes that Pete ’s like , " There ’s something off about this hombre , but he ’s interesting . " And then we take up realize that he ’s not lying about what he articulate . And then finally , Ethan usurps Pete , and I tell people the movie ’s a docudrama because when I did this movie , I was the known guy and Matt was a newcomer . Now Matt is a supernova . And I ’m like , " Hey , buddy . " So it ’s really a documentary .

don’t suck

Nah , Jamie , you are a legend , sir . have me just say you are an absolute legend .

Jamie Kennedy : give thanks you .

I get laid the interpersonal chemistry between you and Matt . Ethan and Pete are this hilarious , odd couple on the road together . Can you talk about produce that chemistry with Matt and did that extend off - screen as well ?

Jamie Kennedy : Yeah , I roll in the hay the guy . I mean , he ’s really leisurely to wreak with , easy to talk to , very opened - minded , plain hilarious and nimble - witted , and he ’s a grinder . There ’s no difference between Matt and any other comic who ’s really successful now , and you ’re seeing why he ’s successful . the great unwashed are like , " Oh my God , he popped off a TikTok . " Yeah , he ’s been doing it for 12 year . We have all lie with him . I ’ve probably know him for six , seven years , seeing him around the circuit , doing a set of shows during COVID with him .

He ’s always been a ego - starter , and that ’s how … He ’s just fun . So we ’re shoot in Vegas , we ’re have a in force fourth dimension , and then off - cover , we would just riff and talk and just keep it going . We went to Circa , had a lot of meals together and just laughed . But chemistry just kind of came natural . I guess that when the great unwashed told me about him for this role , I was like , " That ’s interesting . " And then as I watched his blind mental testing , it was awe-inspiring . It was fucking complete . And I ’m like , " This was written for this guy wire . "

Oh , it perfectly is . He just kind of falls into this purpose . And it ’s weird because I ’m a enceinte fan of Matt ’s standup comedy , and he almost disappears into this part as Ethan . It ’s rattling .

Jamie Kennedy : Very dissimilar than him as a comic . I have in mind , his acting chopper are on show here , and I go for people really expect at that and see that it ’s a great role for him .

Yeah , and he brings a mountain of centre to the character , which was really , really surprising . Not enounce about his playacting , but just the character in general . Now , Don’t Suckis stack with so many brilliant , fabled comedians . How did everyone ’s energy kind of add to the film ? And can you talk about any of the memorable moments that you had off - CRT screen as well ?

Jamie Kennedy : Yeah . Well , it starts with Rick , who is a brilliant comedian , a bang-up writer . He had this great idea , and then I signed on , and then starter with Matt . And then we just have so many unlike level . And then Jimmy Shubert , who ’s another legend , a genius in our earth . But really , I do n’t have it away if the worldwide pop whole know who he is all the way , but one of these character that is just the great at their workmanship .

And Carrot Top was so sweet to come in and do a half a day and just kills it . Then Russell , again , another caption comes in , kills it , gave us a daylight , and was like … We had to turn with his schedule . And then Jimmy Walker who derive in , also another 24-hour interval , so we had to schedule it right . I have in mind , Jimmy Walker raised me .

Russell and Carrot were the class above me , but multitude that I look up to . And Jimmy was also one of the first comedians I ever regard who I looked up to . Kathleen Dunbar , who is a small part who ’s amazing . And then there ’s me , and then there ’s Matt , who ’s the next course . So it ’s a mix . I hope I did n’t leave anyone out , just a mix of all different types that … There was a circumstances of riffing , rent me tell you .

I can think .

Jamie Kennedy : And then also Harry Basil ’s in it who owns The Laugh Factory in Vegas . I ’m trying to recollect if I get out anyone else out . I probably did . If I did , I apologize .

That ’s unbelievable . It really is like a infotainment of all these wild comedians in a behind-

Jamie Kennedy : Don Barnhart . hollo out to Don , who ’s also a great[inaudible 00:12:23 ] .

Fantastic . Now , Pete performs funniness wherever he can . Where ’s the wildest shoes you ’ve ever execute comedy ?

Jamie Kennedy : You sleep with what ’s comic ? 33 years ago , I did my first readiness , but I was just thinking … It ’s just so rummy you say this . I almost would say last yr .

Really ?

Jamie Kennedy : Dude , I ’ve done … I did a gig one time that it was me , and it was the Goo Goo Dolls were mediocre , and Bon Jovi was headline , and we play Coors Field , Milwaukee . We played to 45,000 people . And I did the whole day . I would go out between and do all this stuff . That was one crazy gig . I did another spear for 6,000 mass at Ohio State . That ’s a good one . And then I did a gig last class . My buddy Jay Davis , who ’s also a producer on this moving picture , and really pushed and chance on Matt for this and say , " Matt would be consummate . "

He said , " I buzz off a Christmas fishgig for you . Let ’s go to the Spearmint Rhino ’s Corporate Christmas party . " Now if you roll in the hay what the Spearmint Rhino is , you jazz . And so it was all of the dancers from all the clubs in this one position . Do you think they want to listen to jokes ? I have in mind , but it was all the head of the dissimilar families . Anyway , I had them for about 10 minutes , and then their Department of Energy started quetch in , whatever was go on .

So that was a sturdy fizgig . But then everyone afterwards came up and were like , " I love you . " They took exposure , but there ’s a stack going on . That ’s a hard place to do it , specially after 30 years in the patronage . But I did it as a favour , but it was fun . But I was like , " Ooh , that was elusive . "

That ’s unbelievable . That is perfectly incredible . Now , this film touch sensation , or you guys speak about the comic ’s comics . Who would be your comic ’s comic as your inspiration just in the earth of comedy , or who are a few examples of that ?

Jamie Kennedy : I call back Bill Burr is everyone ’s top of the top right now , and I think that he ’s … But he ’s a comic ’s comedian who really became … Now who break off through all the way . But I think we have some in the film . Like I said , Rick D’Elia is a comedian ’s comic . Jimmy Shubert ’s a comic ’s comedian . I mean , Russell ’s a comic ’s comic , but he ’s also tiptop , super successful . So is Carrot Top .

I sit and laugh all sidereal day when I suffer with Scott , he crack me up . He ’s so unparalleled . And so it ’s like there ’s people that have had success that you sleep together , but then there ’s people you may have never heard of . They could just … In the back of the room , and you ’ll just cry laughing . I have to think off the top , but there ’s a great deal . There ’s a great deal of adept comics that do n’t get the realisation they merit .

wait , I love the way that this movie hail full dress circle with that moment where they ’re evidence the jest with the hotel receptionist . What are you hoping audiences will think or feel after learn this film ?

Jamie Kennedy : That ’s a good question . I suppose that I want people just to … I mean , I ’m all about seek the accuracy , but there ’s so much going on in the worldly concern right now . I do n’t heed reach people a trivial escape , and I want citizenry to watch the movie and just take it in on its own merits . And I call back it ’s one of these moving picture that can last , and I think people will discover it and it can build its own fiddling fandom .

And that ’s why I did it , because I think it ’s a unique assumption . I opine it ’s a real reality . I consider it ’s a fish eye into it , and I want masses to just do n’t gauge it until you watch it . And then like you came away … I mean , dude , you see a lot of movies , so your enthusiasm is incredible , and I appreciate it .

Oh , heed , let me tell you , I feel like this is the thoroughgoing motion picture for anybody that ’s an aspiring comic just to sit down and watch because I feel like you may absorb so much of the industry . I ’m not a comic whatsoever , but I love watching standup comedy , and it felt like as if I was getting … I was another person in the ride along with Pete and Ethan ’s character , which is so much playfulness . But Jamie , look , I got to give thanks you for your time , and I also desire to say give thanks you because this is a full circle moment for me . I was a PA on a show that you did call Oh Sit ! Which was some crazy melodious chair , reality show matter , or challenger affair . It was so much merriment , and I literally made lifelong friend from that show . So I want to thank you for that chance direction early on back in my life history . So give thanks you .

Jamie Kennedy : Wow . That was 10 twelvemonth ago .

Jamie Kennedy : Oh Sit ! Should have go . That was fun , right ?

It was so much fun . It was so much playfulness . One of the best jobs I ’ve ever had in my life .

Jamie Kennedy : That ’s awesome , dude . A lot of mass came out of that show . toroid . Tori Kelly , she was one of the house Singer .

I knew . I jazz why she looked familiar to me . I was like , " Who is this ? " She was one of the performers there , yes .

Jamie Kennedy : Yes . Is n’t that bang-up ? Taryn Manning did a node music show , and actually Theo Von shape for Yahoo News and launch the track and interview us . I intend , so there ’s a caboodle of good memories on that , humankind . That ’s nerveless . I liked doing that show . That ’s awesome that you did that .
