AsJohn Wick 5remains up in the air , Stahelski recently sat down for an audience withColliderin which he reveals that heoriginally had Chan in head for the function of Caine . While Chan would ultimately not be able to participate , the manager divulge that the case he had written actually became far more interesting after Yen became involved . “ I spent a lot more time with Jackie Chan , so while writing the script , I had Jackie in psyche as an elderly blind swordsman kind of guy . you may kind of picture the erstwhile man with the cane and the whole thing like that .
“ And because of other things very ahead of time on , Jackie could n’t do it due to scheduling , and COVID had just started . It kind of messed with everything , everyone ’s docket , so we just kept developing , develop , developing . switch off to months and months later , the script had changed so much , the fib had changed so much , and my estimation of what the persona should be kind of alter .
“ I ’ve always wanted to work with Donnie , so I called up Donnie , and , to be very fair to Donnie , I called up Donnie , and we had this New World chat , and I told him the narration about how it was originally written for a much older type to do this .
“ And Donnie , who ’s incredibly forward and blunt , goes , ‘ Look , I hump your moving-picture show , but I ’ve been a unsighted swordsman before . I ’ve been the Rogue One and all the other stuff . ’ He ’s like , ‘ I ’ve been that bozo before . Why do I have to be this old bozo that stumbles around like this ? ’ I ’m like , ‘ Well , you fuck … I do n’t know , you ’re unsighted ? ’ ”
“ He ’s like , ‘ Well , why ca n’t I be cool ? ’ I ’m like , ‘ What do you mean ? ’ He ’s like , ‘ That ’s not cool . I wanna be John Wick . John Wick is cool . Why ca n’t it be John Wick but blind and nerveless ? ’ And it just come to me , and then I called Donnie back the next daytime .
“ Donnie and I both pull all these image of Bruce Lee in the weedy railroad tie and the suit and stuff . He ’s like , ‘ No , dude , ’ he ’s like , ‘ Caine should be the coolest dude in this picture show with the sunglasses and the stuff . ’ Donnie literally build that fibre , and I ’m like , ‘ Donnie , this is awe-inspiring . This is what I like . ’
“ So look , I ’m a huge rooter of Donnie . You arrest ta remember , Donnie ’s like Keanu ; he ’s a director , a manufacturer , a writer , and an actor , so he sees affair from a lot of different directions . So the fact that he was concerned , and not only was he interested in the place and in the films , but he is interested in working with Keanu and I in a collaborative direction . Once we know it was ok to make and give his ideas and operate them into it , it was one of the good family relationship I ’ve had with a hurl member in growing ever . ”
Donnie Yen’s Caine Is A John Wick 4 Highlight
Reeves ' public presentation as Wickis emphatically muted and one - note , with the character speaking relatively few business line and mostly just remaining this absolute force for death and destruction throughout the four films . The dealership , then , relies on colorful and nonconcentric supporting charactersto flesh out its world and bring home the bacon levity , depth , and flavor . Caine sure enough does this .
WhileJohn Wick : Chapter 3 – Parabellumintroduced an resister who admire Wick as a fan with Zero ( Mark Dacascos ) , Caine serve as something of an equal to Wick . The two were revealed to have been friends in the past , and there ’s a clear sense of regard between them . This respect add together a mother wit of hesitation to their combat throughout the film , which is further complimented by the fact that Caine is only really back in the secret plan because his daughter is under threat , introducing an entirely fresh kind of enmity into the franchise .
The account between Wick and Caine results in an uneasy truce between them toward theJohn Wick : Chapter 4ending , which leads to one of the film ’s standout sequences as the pair fight their style up a stairway in Paris . While a blind assassin would have been interesting enough as an antagonist , choices regardingCaine ’s backstory , motive , and appearance make him far more intriguing . Evidently , Yen had a big hand in crafting the character , andJohn Wick : Chapter 4is all the better for it .
