While known for her iconic work in the horror classic , Linda Blairhas devoted much of her life to animal right via the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation . Having gotten her head start in commercials and mark advertizing , Blair quickly rise to stardom with her role as the possessed young girl Regan MacNeil in 1973’sThe exorciser , for which she earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and won the Golden Globe for the same prize . In addition to turn back for the sequel , 1977’sThe Exorcist II : The Heretic , Blair would go on to asterisk in a wide variety of task includingAirport 1975,Roller Boogie , andHell Night .
Amid her playing , Blair was a dedicated brute rightfield activist , going on to establish the Linda Blair Worldheart Foundation in 2006 , a delivery hound wellness center act to aid animals both in Los Angeles and 51 rescues from Hurricane Katrina . Over the preceding 17 eld , Blair and her founding have worked to help rescue animals receive new homes , fighting pitbull breeding bans , and provide low-priced alimentation program and wellness imagination for the brute .
The Exorcist sure as shooting franchise has its ups and down in terms of quality , but for any completist , there is a sure order to take in all five picture show .
projection screen Rantinterviewed Linda Blair to discourse the Worldheart Foundation , their efforts to combat one of the bad beast crises in account , how the public can serve , and open up about herExorcistreturn .
Linda Blair Talks Worldheart Foundation &The ExorcistReturn
Screen Rant : I ’m very felicitous to circulate the word aboutyour Worldheart Foundation , it ’s one with such an of import goal in mind . And it ’s amazing to believe that it ’s been almost 20 years now that it ’s been give-up the ghost on . How does it feel for you reflecting on that bequest , and everything that you ’ve done in the time since ?
Linda Blair : So , I start rescuing in 1997 , ' 96 , somewhere in there , it was after mom had croak . I had a Clinton heeler that was still with me , and I was working on a undertaking , and she fell ill , and I lost her within four twenty-four hour period to autoimmune disease . I literally was so devastated that I felt like I ’d lost everything . I had worked for everybody , done all the movies and entertainment , but everything I cared about was dying , and I kind of had a imaginativeness that came to me about the dogs needing help , and that once they go into the shelter , they ca n’t get out . They need help . And that ’s when I started , I called the tax shelter . I say , " How do you do this ? How do I help ? I do n’t be intimate . " And this is what most people are like , they ’re like , " Our bosom are gruelling . We do n’t experience what to do , but how do you avail ? "
And that ’s how I started delivery and foster and getting involved in learning . Then , I did Grease on Broadway , and when I came back to California , a big Inferno cop follow me habitation . It was the height of all the controversy . I looked and entrust my judgment that this is not the unmanageable wienerwurst , the slayer frump , and all the prejudice everything that was being posted in the press . Like , " Wait a min , something ’s really incorrect . " And that ’s how I got so involved with the pitbulls and teach that it was what homo had been doing to them , the dog struggle and all the gloominess . And that ’s how I beat so involve with the breed . I end up in Sacramento fighting the breed proscription , and we stopped the ban . We were not able to stop BSL , which is breed specific legislation , and that ’s what has caused a lot of trouble for people if they ’re in an flat or different homes , their insurance companies are dropping insurance policy , because they have the right to differentiate you what they will and wo n’t insure .
That goes into today ’s times with multitude in Florida . policy companies are now pulling insurance for fire insurance , emergency , hurricane , flowage . Through the years , everything that I ’ve done and worked for and started the foundation out here after Hurricane Katrina , I realized I call for to bribe property , judge to change the laws and then get back to work . But we ’re croak on 17 eld later on , and we ’re at the height of the biggest creature crisis in history . I ’m strain out to the imperativeness , I wrote a 14 - page written document to the Governor . We are at the biggest time in story with coming out of the pandemic , and I had attempt to do everything I could , I did verbalise to the Governor at that time , what I thought might happen . The veterinarians were becoming more difficult to find , we are adjudicate to get to the bottom of the want of veterinarians in California , I ’m not sure across the country .
There are many people that do n’t desire to work for corporations , the small veterinarians have been bought up . You ca n’t find spay and neuter [ services ] , if you have an emergency , you ca n’t get an appointment , so we are trying to treat this and visualise out what to do . In the meanwhile , I did a deep dive on UC Davis , who has California state money , and their concession are $ 5,000 , so the state , along with other entities , we ’re doing a whistleblower deep dive on where ’s the money for the shelters , so that they can help provide for the animals . That ’s really where we ’re at right now , and with the help of the press to let the public know , adopt , go to the shelters , help out , support rescue .
If , like in California , the Los Angeles County Animal Services , they do offer voucher , if you need solid food , if you have lose your nursing home , they ’ll do a month of embarkment for you . They will [ allow for ] non - emergency medical care , they will give vouchers , they ’ll help spay and neuter . But these programs require to get more press so people know that there is hope . Instead of dumping frankfurter in the desert , or just take them to the shelter say , " I do n’t have it away what to do , I ’ve lose everything . " And that ’s really what ’s going on , and so we ’re all just try on to sour together , it is the defective clip in history for companion animal , and we ’re trying to find answers . It ’s really heavy .
I can guess , it sound like a very important clip in the Foundation ’s story . So , with all the steps you are bring currently , how do you find the future looks ? Do you feel like you are pick out the right step forrad to better benefit these programs ?
Linda Blair : I feel that we need the press , we really do need the press to help us to get the word out . Because societal media has become so meddlesome , and hoi polloi are busy with their lives , you have a warfare going on , we had Paradise Fire years ago that take out the entire townsfolk . Then you had Maui , and mass do n’t understand the environmental chance , and these dangers that can happen and what needs to be done to keep your household secure , your animals safe , and to be more community point to help each other . These situations are all the factors of why we are at this time .
The fauna has never recuperate , and with the warfare in Israel and such sadness and loss , it ’s a time in story for people to begin banding together and realize that we can be better . We can do better for world and brute . It ’s the most challenging prison term in account , so with the pressure , you may help circularise message and that there are those that do care , and there ’s still in force people out there . As my mother used to always say , " Find like - tending people , and you may change the world . you may make a dispute . " And I have to think that . It ’s rent hoi polloi know that there are others that do care , and that ’s why I finger like the press has such a larger consultation to get to , because social media has become difficult , it really is .

You ’re right , this is a very churning time and the animals need us as much as we take each other .
Linda Blair : [ Companion ] creature were created by humans for humans , they are there through difficult sentence . They ’re there to avail those that are physically challenged , disabilities , the animate being are working . There are therapeutic cats , dogs , I mean , a guinea fowl squealer can be therapeutic . But with the frankfurter , some are mean to be agricultural , they help , whether it ’s a molding collie , the large dogs like Pyrenees and gamprs , some of the breeds we ’d never pick up of . But they ’re there to help and to bring . A St. Bernard has a line of work . And most people that add up to me for adoptions are looking for family domestic dog . That ’s become the family line unit , and they are there to rent you know if a storm is coming .
If you have a good human relationship with your companion beast , they are so intuitive . They have talent that those of us that are with them see , realize and rely on . They ’re part of the team , they ’re part of the family . If you ’re pitiful , [ or have ] depression , they ’re there to help , and to see . It ’s intuitive with them . And usually with my adoption , I ’m place back people ’s family building block through their loss . They realize whether they have another frump that needs a ally , whether it ’s them , they want a companion , whether it ’s traveling to be with them at family with the kids , whatever it may be , I interview , and we go over , " What are you looking for ? What kind of friend ? What is it that you need in your life , and that you may also issue for them ? "
Because the animals have to have just as much [ care ] , they have to have exercise , attention . They love education , they love learning , playing games , and being your partner . They ’re there through duncish and thin , they ’re not to be fox to the streets or to the desert to survive . The laws say you must protect your expert admirer , so when they are dumped in the desert , or on the streets , they do n’t bang how to survive . That ’s kind of where we ’re at , asking for people to clear there ’s avail out there . postulate for help , and someone will show up , someone will come . I believe people finger so desperate right now , they ’re angry . They ’re hurt , I think , in my biotic community of rescue , the saving man .
I watched a program on soldiers with PTSD and their companion dogs , and understand the deliverance community is support from PTSD , because we see thing and know things that are happen by human being to the animals . We see the death . We cognize the shelters are at high - kill [ rate ] mighty now , these are innocent life story that are being misplace . That shock and veneration has become too much , and it ’s why I ’m pushing so severely to say we can do better , we call for to do well . We need veterinarians to step up , not retreat , and to serve us with spay and neuter ; help us with the vaccination .
Again , my letter to the Governor is accessible to all press and the public , and what I design where we can do better , what can be done . But if we do n’t make variety , there is no mode to stop what is happening . It ’s a flood tide of beast like when Noah ’s Ark of the Covenant come in five time over and just turned over . It has to stop . It does cost taxpayer dollars for the protection , there are some shelters that are not entirely assailable , and we require result as to why . shelter were never meant to intake anything other than lose pets to deliver them home base , so to address . They were never built for what is happen , and the public does n’t realize that ’s not what a shelter is for .

Rescue Partners were created in orderliness to help the shelters with the overflow , and with the adoptions , and right now , it has such an overpowering flood of beast . There is no outer space , there ’s not enough funding , there ’s not enough help , and that is why it ’s so important that the populace understands , join force with rescues , ask their residential area , " How do we aid ? What do you need ? " Every rescue and tax shelter are happy to help people clean house out their planetary house , their bedding , towels , used poppycock . They think , " Oh , well , this is n’t dependable enough for people and Goodwill . " So , give it to deliverance and tax shelter . We can apply it at all time . Funding , food , all of these unlike avenues that are jolly simplistic , that can help make such a difference .
I did also want to ask a few questionsaboutThe Exorcist , if you do n’t mind .
Linda Blair : Oh , absolutely ! I did 75 commercials from Welch ’s grape gelatin , and I think it was Trident Sugarless Gum , and I think my first commercial message was Downy fabric softener . " In like a social lion , out like a lamb . " I did Golden ’s mustard , we did a lot of cereals , and then when I was 10 , we did a soap opera called Hidden Faces . I was the girl of a political leader , and I think of posture there going , " What are they talk about ? " I did n’t understand any of it , I just wanted to be in Disney movies like Lassie and Flipper . My pappa was like , " No , we ’re not moving to California . " So , by the time I was around 12 , I enunciate , " ma , this is n’t really for me . " Modeling and commercial were really severely back then .
That ’s when it was the old cameras with the showcase and the bad light source . We used to place upright there for half an hour just to take one picture show . masses are starting to ascertain some of my clay sculpture pictures , they ’ll show up now . Like Butterick , the patterns , simplicity , Butterick . Because adult female all sewed ; even I was taught how to sew . And then there was JC Penney , Sears , all of those catalog . I was the Cinderella Girl for the New York Times Magazine , which would add up out on Sundays . So there was three of us , three of us , I think , and we were the Cinderella Girls . So by that fourth dimension , I was planning to stop is when the book , The Exorcist that Bill Blatty , of course , authored was the prominent matter in the world . So you had like The Godfather , you had — I do n’t know , I was so young — The Exorcist , these were novels that were , I intend , everybody around the world , that ’s what you were reading . Not me , not kids .
When we had the interview , and I went in and adjoin with the casting director , Juliette Taylor , and she had me read some matter , I thought , " Boy , this is kind of filthy . " [ Laughs ] And it was n’t like anything like the dialogue in the motion picture , but wow . So , when we got called back to talk to Billy and Mom add up , and it took about three month of cast , and the war paint psychometric test , and the other matter , and then finally , they cast it , there was like another three month . There was almost six months before we even start . We start in Washington , DC , all those clips you ’ll see of Washington and go around the monuments and affair . And then we started the production , of course , in the city , in New York City .
Billy chose to get away from the California child labor laws , so that ’s why it was shot there . And it was a closed set . Nobody knew , nobody saw me . I go to shoal in my dressing room , we had a tutor named Ellen , and she would come , I had a science projection I did . Mom got me brooder at FAO Schwarz , I did chickens , which you ’ll see there ’s pic of me with a volaille and a rooster that I had . Everything was as normal as possible on the weekend . We ’d go to Pennsylvania , I would rag , I had a horse in Pennsylvania , and then we ’d go to Connecticut , I could see my friends . So , I cerebrate all of that keep it as normal as possible . It was a farsighted process , it was wearying , but they did everything they could to always keep me as attached to the life that I knew . When the pic came out , which was December , they did the big screening in New York , we all realise , " Oh , wow , this is huge . " You knew this was move to change the world , but nobody could translate that back then . And to this day , to have it be 50 eld later , the anniversary , it really is quite affecting .
And because of the smash , we were unable to talk about it . Warner Bros. could n’t do like a openhanded company . Sadly , we miss Billy Friedkin this class . But , Ellen , myself , there ’s still a few of us around , and it ’s sad that that did n’t get the big love that the audience sure enough has shown and fall in to the movie through the years . I always separate people it ’s a theological thriller . That is what Blatty always said , it is not a horror moving-picture show , it ’s a theological thriller . It ’s about in effect and evil . It ’s about having organized religion for the confirming , for the good . I feel like that ’s the chess game game that ’s going on mightily now , upright and iniquity could not be more at war on the satellite than it is right on now . I feel the movie has a lot to say if you hear , it ’s brilliant . It ’s a brilliant screenplay . And then Billy Friedkin , the direction . I stand for , the motion-picture photography , Owen Roizman , changed the world . He create so much that had never been done before .
And Dick Smith ’s war paint , my Almighty . He would tell me account about , lease ’s see , he did Dustin Hoffman in Little Big Man , he did Creature of the Black Lagoon , Boris Karloff , all the monster case were in his cellar . While we were doing the makeup , Rick Baker was the helper , run on to win all the Academy Awards , he was his assistant . And on the bulwark , all these monster headland , the make-up and things , like wow . He told me all the account . Back then , you only had vampire motion picture , you had The Mummy , you had Frankenstein , the Creature of the Black Lagoon . That was what it was back then , not what it ’s become nowadays . Dick Smith was the front - Caranx crysos in all of it , and it was n’t until years later on that I could have appreciation . Because it was like , torture for a small fille , that was hard . Having that beautiful makeup utilise every day . [ Laughs ] minuscule daughter do n’t savor that very much .
I read that you werea supervisor onBelieverin helping to make certain that the girls were protected . Is that correct ?
Linda Blair : That is so true . So , when they came to me and pronounce , " We are going to do this , and we want you to know . " This is several twelvemonth ago , and I say , " You need to cognise I break on platter saying do n’t ever do it to a child again , do not do this . " So , kind of in all the discussions they say , " If you were to fare on as a executive program to help , we want to do the right matter . " So it ’s more to do the right thing to make indisputable the miss are take maintenance of , and then as time went on , that was when David Green said , " Is there any chance you would do a cameo ? " And I was like , " Well , you ’ve catch Ellen , you ’ve develop the storyline . " I helped them do work with the characters , Reagan ’s character reference between Reagan and Chris , because they really needed help with that . I was part of this the whole time , and it was a gag order , so I could n’t tell anybody .
That ’s kind of how that pass , where I made a picayune cameo at the end , which the audience was very appreciative of , from what I understand . The girls knock it out of the parking area , they worked really , really hard . I had a religious medical specialist there just to talk about thing if they needed , psychiatrists in case they needed anything . I was a very private , confident child , but it did n’t signify that I did n’t have question after the film came out of what adults were ask . That ’s what I explained , " Have these things uncommitted , these shaft useable , to the girls , because they do n’t lie with them , and I ca n’t be there , they ca n’t see me on stage set . " And then , after the plastic film was finish , I match with him before it came out . I meet with them and had given my tidings to be there for them .
I explained , " Now , you ’ve got a smash , you ’re not going to be able-bodied to talk about it , people can spill about you . And you ’re not going to know what to do with that , you ’re not going to be able-bodied to do that , ' Yes , it was acting , and it was a movie , ' and why are you a part of it . So it ’s gon na be really unvoiced . And then you ’re gon na [ hear ] , ' Well , you ’re following in Linda Blair ’s footsteps , ' " and I said , " That ’s a hard one to conform to . " And I said , " I ’m here for you , you both knocked it out of the car park , that ’s your own work , you did that yourself . " And they ’re both beautiful , beautiful spirits . They ’re really , really quite extraordinary , and I am hope that the business organisation will see them as self-governing . They are very , very talented , very kind , very cherubic . So I trust that they can go on to have some amazing career , and I hope people appreciated the movie . It ’s meant for their entertainment .
I think both the girls were phenomenal in the movie . You cite the scene with Ellen , and it is a very moving panorama to see you two back together again . What was it like that day on set between you two getting to reunify for this motion-picture photography , especially sinceshe was n’t onThe Heretic ?
Linda Blair : Well , Ellen and I had stay put in touch a little morsel through the long time . She really is a supporter of the Foundation , she loves animal as much as I do , she travels with her little dog . But no , we seek to keep it like — Well , first of all , no one make love , I was list under a unlike name . Everybody ’s like , " Who ’s this person exhibit up on the set ? " Nobody knew , so it was a surprisal . They keep me under umbrella , they kept me very well - hidden .
The only people that knew were makeup and wardrobe , and first theatre director and so on . So Ellen live , I knew , of course , and we just kept it a secret and private . We ’re both actors , and we just turned it on for the audience , that ’s for the hearing . Then Ellen and I got to have nice giggle clock time afterward , and I love Ellen . How can you not love Ellen ? She ’s got to be one of the most phenomenal actresses ever ! To watch her body of work , she ’s just so unbelievable . You just do n’t see her work ; you just do n’t see it , she ’s charming . And so you beautiful , oh my god , in individual , she is gorgeous !
Before I countenance you go , David ’s talked about potentiallya whole trilogy arrive off ofBeliever .
Linda Blair : I do n’t know what they ’re gon na do . I really do n’t . And that ’s not that ’s not a muzzle .
If they involve you to come back , though , would you be concerned in continuing Reagan ’s story ?
Linda Blair : justly this very second — we all had to get through the strike , and to sympathise what was get to be the future . I created a show for the dog that is an acrobatic game , so I experience that it will be an unbelievable , incredible show . I am trying to shop it , that ’s where my heart is right now . And then , I ’m looking to expand and move the Foundation and make it more available to the world . My chronicle lie with the animals , so I have a lot of matter , my dreams of what I want to do , which should never alter , it ’s all animal - based . I had scripts at all the studio — not all , but many studio — a lot of ripe projects prior to grease one’s palms this prop .
And what I found was I could not do take and execute the foundation at the same clip . It is very difficult to find hoi polloi that really infer animal welfare , and ca n’t get through the PTSD that is constant . This is a hard business , because it ’s existent life . So I kind of know that I want to proceed this , I need to fix the job , but I want the public to help . This must bump , it ’s become too political , and that ’s get to stop . So , while I fight this , I do n’t eff what they ’re gon na do . I just be intimate my sentence is not exactly useable for picture show at the minute . And that ’s the honestness of it . If we fix this animal trouble , I ’ll go back to work . But nobody seems to need to desex the animal problems , so I wo n’t go back to work until this is posit .
I hope that this audience can be one of many that put you on the way to furbish up the job .
Linda Blair : People seem to draw a blank that I had this monolithic life history , and that ’s why I ’m good with it all . After The Exorcist , people forget like Airport ' 75 with George Kennedy and Charlton Heston and Gloria Swanson , I mean , it was unbelievable . And to go on , Born Innocent , which was the first television movie and it changed primetime television . It ’s the 8 - 10 see hour , it does n’t exist now anymore , but it did , it ’s what produce that . Sarah T. — portrayal of a Teenage Alcoholic , that was with Larry Hagman , who I was like , " Oh my god , I Dream of Jeannie , it ’s my dada . Really ? Wow . "
Mark Hamill was not have intercourse , he was a newcomer , and so helpful to me to understand how to get through these crowing scenes and monologues . These flick changed primetime television system , working with Martin Sheen in Sweet Hostage , working with Richard Burton . Hello ! People have no theme what it ’s like to work with the masters . You have to be quick for it . When he was Richard Burton , OMG , unbelievable . The energy is incredible , oh my god . Elizabeth Taylor played my female parent in triumph at Entebbe , although you did n’t see us in a aspect together , I catch to hang out with her .
Hell Night is a furore classic classic , Roller Boogie , [ there was ] a big tumbler skating phase , everybody loves all that . These are movies that change and were part of people ’s history , what my fans my age group , and little young , little older , they grew up with me and I get it . I am their Brady Bunch . You know what I intend ? I am there , they grew up with me as I arise up with Flipper and Lassie , and I am honored to be part of that chronicle . I just want to change the public for my animal friends , that ’s the most authoritative thing to me , it just has to change . The laws have to shift , and we require help , and I am really appreciative of your time . Thank you .
