The director spoke at length about the picture , specifically the minute involving the corpse in the sarcophagus and the artifacts claim by the French . Read his full response below :
He would n’t be Tutankhamun , perhaps a less crucial Pharaoh . They did raid and found and work back a deal of terrific artifacts from Egypt , include the needles of Cleopatra that are stand now in Paris . There was a caboodle of pillage done by Napoleon in those extraneous places like Italy , where they took all the fine art out of the cathedral in Milan . I saw this wonderful two paintings . One was of a humanity sitting on a horse stare at the Sphinx , and it was Napoleon . So I thought I had to have that because no one has done the Egyptian campaign , and the truth .
They took it over pretty easily . I think the Egyptians threw in the towel immediately . I do n’t cogitate there ’s even any conflict . And so they were capable to , allow ’s say , revel themselves in Egypt at that special point . While he was there , they were emphatically stare at extraordinary artifacts and make up one’s mind to take them back to France . And then one of the paintings also was in standing there with a group of elegant officers as the jewel casket is being opened to look at the flesh that had been wrapped in bandages for probably 3000 years . I thought , I just had to do it , it was such a beautiful counterpoint of two universes . The modern existence of Napoleon Bonaparte , and the ancient population of the Pharaoh , a lesser Pharaoh , but nevertheless a Pharaoh . He would ’ve to be important to being embalmed and actually entomb in the casket like that .
So what ’s interesting though , as we were doing it , Napoleon , Joaquin , gets this boxwood to stand on , he take away off his hat , put it on top of the casket , and stared closely at the Pharaoh . Then he reached out gently to connect with the Earth’s surface of this hide that looks like brown paper at this point . And the Pharaoh suddenly slipped to one side and gave Joaquin a hell of a shock . But I allow it pass . And he play with that momentarily , mother down off the box , and when I said , cut off , he said , did you do that ? I said , no , it was an fortuity . It was fantastic . It frighten off the sh*t out of him . I said , no , no , no , I did n’t do that .

Why Napoleon’s Egyptian Invasion Scene Is Controversial
The scene is facing criticism mostly becauseNapoleon ’s encroachment of Egypt itself was controversial . As Scott says , his motion picture is the first to depict Napoleon ’s Egyptian campaign on film . The controversy surrounding this campaign stems primarily from Napoleon ’s imperialistic ambitions . His invasion of Egypt was part of his overarching strategy to solidify French dominance in the Middle East and weaken British trade routes to India . This expansionist agenda was wide seen as a violation of Egyptian sovereignty and a major scourge to regional stability .
Napoleon justified his intrusion of Egypt by framing it as a charge to propagate the principle of the French Revolution , include liberty and equality . However , many modern historians have argue that these Enlightenment paragon were a mere pretext , andhis real motivations were root in strategical and economic interests . As Scott credit , Napoleon ’s violence also engaged in all-encompassing cultural pillaging by taking many worthful artifact back to France .
Napoleon ’s Egyptian invasion scene is also earning some historical unfavorable judgment for play tight and loose with the fact . As historian Dan Snow has indicate out , Napoleon did n’t in reality fire at the Pyramid , which were in reality much further away , nor did he shoot the nose off the Sphinx either . However , Ridley Scott has made it clear that he does n’t worry about diachronic accuracy , telling his critic to " get a life " and"shut the f**k up . "
