Our Flag mean Deathseason 2 is consummate , meet the reunify Edward Teach , a.k.a . Blackbeard , and Stede Bonnet settling down aside from a animation at sea . The slowly - incinerate love tale between the two men was n’t the only driving force behind the time of year , however . New threats , new opportunities , and the occasional phantasmagoric twist offered both Stede and Ed the prospect to grow as multitude and address their awe and flaws .

Stede Bonnet and Edward Teach are the affectionateness ofOur Flag Means Death , so it ’s meet that the roles were filled by longtime friends and pardner Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi . The New Zealanders have worked together numerous times in the past , notably on undertaking like the hit HBO musical drollery seriesFlight of the Conchords(Waititi train and wrote on the show , and Darby asterisk as the Conchords ’ pitiful director Murray ) . Rhys Darby On Our Flag Means Death Season 2

Screen Rant : Stede is becoming more of a pirate this season . He ’s down people on purpose ; He ’s making deal . What was your preferred part of his pirate ship journey , as oppose to his romanticistic journeying ?

Rhys Darby : I call back the fact that he did adjudicate to go for it , because the whole thing was a demented fantasy , really . In the first season , he bear witness to himself that he really was n’t up for it . Then , when he determine to go back , he had something to contend for — which was dearest — and then he also missed the gang . I call up that was a big matter ; he had a new family , and I imagine he realized that he needed to step up .

My favorite part was becoming that Errol Flynn - type romantic paladin that was actually up to . [ It was ] doing the stuff with Con ( O’Neill ) as Izzy grooming Stede : rophy swings , various leaf blade movements , and tear the guns . Ultimately , my favorite part was plausibly running through the sand dunes in New Zealand and laying into multiple enemies as I see Blackbeard in the distance campaign others . There ’s a moment where I ’m head for the hills along , I get someone with my sword , and then I blast another guy . That cool action stuff ; I never cognize the persona was going to get to that point .

That speaks to something that I love about your performances . One of my favorite appearance ever isFlight of the Conchords , and I feel like you are so expert at play mass who are unequal to . It ’s so cool to see your character in this become competent , but where on the spectrum of incompetency is most fun for you as an actor ?

Rhys Darby : It ’s decidedly fun to play someone who is confident but not competent , which is what my forte is , really . Or , as my mother would say , ‘ more sass than trousers ’ . He can talk the talk , but he ’s not really walking the walk . But , I think , button given to shove , there ’s got to be some walk there , because you ’ve mystify to be capable .

I think putting anyone under uttermost duress would [ make them ] have to remain firm up . If someone broke into your house and was trying to round you — desire that never go on to you — those [ are those ] moments where you ’ve pay off to make a split decision : “ Am I going to be a doormat , or can I apply some intensity level to actually fight this ? ” That consequence , which I think happened with Stede in the second time of year when he killed the master scoundrel by throwing a fiddle at his head , is that consequence when you pause . It ’s that surprise that one gets when they agnize that they can stand up , even if it ’s for a fleeting second . That ’s the strong part of humanity that I imagine we all have to be capable to get to at some point in our lives , and it ’s really cool to portray that .

Our Flag Means Death season 2 finale feat. Ed Teach

One of my favorite moments from time of year two is the reunification between Stede and Ed . It sums up the tone of the show so well , because on one hand , you ’re leaning over Ed , tap him to live , and on the other hand , you ’re a merman swimming through the sea . What was it comparable to take both side of that ? Was one more challenging ?

Rhys Darby : It was definitely more challenging swim underwater dressed as a mermaid , but that was amazing to do , and when I found out we were doing that , I was super activated . I was very felicitous to be a Ethel Merman , and I ’m happy I draw it off . I ’ve done a bit of mermaid swimming in my past , as a kid . I was a bit of a mer — nestling . I used to pretend I was a mermaid . So , once I got that leg movement occur , I was like , “ Oh , my God , I can do this . I ’m being a cryptid . ” I was very mad .

play the intensely emotional part of tone that I ’d lost [ Ed ] was really nerveless to do , because comedy come prosperous for me . give way to the other side of the coin and playing a deep , spectacular part is a bit of a challenge ; to rise to that challenge is really awesome . Now , of course , I ’m not imagine that I ’m also swimming as a mermaid , because in Stede ’s nous , that did n’t materialise . That was something strictly for Ed , but see it fare together like that was super cool . I call back that ’s one of my favorite parts of the whole time of year , too .

You and Taika have screw each other for a foresighted sentence , and it make sense that the comedy stuff would be easier for both of you . What form of study do you two do together to train for the very dramatic things ?

Rhys Darby : Literally nothing . We do n’t prepare . Preparedness is overrated , because you ’re then organize something , and you do n’t desire to organise it . I retrieve it needs to be natural , and you need to feel it at the moment .

We do n’t even rehearse those scenes . When I just see him for the first time , he ’s lie there , and I ’m walking down the stair , the stage set and everything are so real that I ’m mechanically that person , and it affect me . What you ’re seeing is my honest delineation of how I would feel at that moment .

Our Flag Means Death

The end of the season is really beautiful with the choice that Stede and Ed make to accept each other through their flaw . Do you feel like these two character are capable of having a healthy relationship going forward into a potential season 3 ?

Rhys Darby : I think it ’s definitely a fantasy . A fancy within a fantasy . I think , in the back of their minds , the characters must be thinking , “ This is not going to last , ” because the reality within their story is that they ’re plagiarizer , they ’re wanted men , and they ’re going to be hunted by the British . You ca n’t help but put in what actually happened in history , and [ the British ] never let up until all of these pirates were either attend or captivate . There ’s only ever a couple that got away , and it sure was n’t those two .

And they ’re both smart , those guys , as characters , [ and ] as people . They must be thinking , “ Oh , this is awe-inspiring , but surely [ in ] the next two days , or within a hebdomad , there ’s lead to be someone criticize at the door with a massive accelerator pedal present [ us ] . ” There ’s such a prominent fancy element to the show , a romantic , beautiful constituent to it—‘What if?’—but at the close of the day , I think we can either allow for it there or , realistically , they ’d be pulled straight back into a office .

Also , both of them — but principally Stede — would be thinking about that crowd , and conceive about those guys who are basically his mob . After that honeymoon point of those two run an inn , they ’d likely get going fight down about something unintelligent , [ and ] he ’ll be thinking , “ God , I miss those other guys , ” because that ’s his family . I ’d love to see where it goes next . I do n’t think the bliss would last .

For me , a lot of the funniest people in the world are from New Zealand , yourself include . you’re able to kind of delineate British humor , you’re able to kind of define American humor ; do you palpate like there is a certain sensibility among funny masses from New Zealand that carry through all these task ?

Rhys Darby : We ’re definitely a mix of both the culture — American and British — but we ’re more British ; we grew up in part of the Commonwealth . I think what dissent us from the Brits in some style is we have a inclination toward tolerant , optimistic humor , rather than making it too intellectually obscure . That ’s what the Americans really love : we offer up something that is different to the humour you get [ in the US ] , and it is way more quirky and bizarre , but there ’s an optimism to it . I think that ’s something that Americans can latch on to ; there ’s Bob Hope .

That ’s what I would say is something about the Kiwi look that come across around the world . No one find fault little New Zealand for anything , really , so we kind of get away with it . And we kind of have a hopeful outlook on life because of the neat stuff that we ’ve done in our nation , I think , so maybe that vibrate through .
