Screen Rant : We ’ve got to start with theStrange New Worldscrossover , which I loved . How did you feel when you learn the episode and the audience ’s response to it ? Because you could not talk about it . And I sleep with it was killing you .
Tawny Newsome : I could n’t talk about it . But you know what I did ? I had a little private hang at my house . I tempt the writer . Kat Lyn could n’t make it because she was under the atmospheric condition , but Bill Wolkoff came . Jack [ Quaid ] was out of town , so he could n’t come but I had a duad of people come over who had turn on it , and then I had my booster there to look out it . Watching everybody watch it together , that fill up my soul . But yeah , it was very hard not to verbalize about it . I still have so many behind - the - scenes pictures I desire to post and so much I want to share about this experience . I do n’t get laid where to originate . Celia [ Rose Gooding ] really wanted to eat high mallow puffs in one vista . And finally , Jonathan Frakes took them off . He was like , " No cheeseflower heave at the scene ! Ethan ! Ethan [ Peck ] is my dear cherubic protagonist . Tawny Newsome : I think Mike [ McMahan ] told me that that was his long game plan right smart back in … probably when season 2 was airing and they were writing season 3 . He was like , " I roll in the hay what I ’m run to do . I ’m proceed to bind this all back to the " Lower Decks " installment of TNG . " And I was like , " Oh my God , that ’s so sassy . " I did not acknowledge about the Locarno of it . I think I learned that when I read the season 4 hand and saw how he did it . But I , as a fan , love anytime he ties Mariner into these iconic moments and episode throughout canon . So seeing Mariner in the preamble to " The First Duty , " the fact that Mariner is in the scene where canonically , that ’s the first time we see or meet Josh , the freaking hombre who died ! That stuff and nonsense wee-wee my nerd heart just swell . I ’m like " Oh my god , she was there the first time we see Josh ! "
That was unbelievable . Teenage Mariner in Starfleet Academy , that could be a spin - off on its own .
Tawny Newsome : Yeah , oh my God , I know she ’s so precious . She was very young in those clips , which was also fun to try and young - up my voice .
Mariner want to remain an national flag tying into Sito ’s death ? That makes perfect sense . It really tracks and explains so much about her fiber .
Tawny Newsome : It really does . And I thought it was so impertinent for our cockamamie 22 - second cartoon to really wait as long as they did to really earn that pity , and that extremely emotionally reverberating railroad tie to canyon . I do n’t imagine we could have or should have done it earlier . We had to garner it through all of the playfulness and action and funny . And then episode 9 of season 4 , we finally bring out this emotional bomb , and I screw it .
I told Mike McMahan a couple of week ago that I thought the time of year 4 coda was the best variation of Mariner we ever saw . She put everything together . Everything that makes her a hero was on display when she tries to block Locarno . And I be intimate that she never once considered Locarno ’s pass to join him . She consider in Starfleet .

And I mean it showed that she not only think in Starfleet , but she believed that she can effect change within Starfleet the right way . Tawny Newsome : I love the girls ' trips episodes . Tawny Newsome : That tongue gag kills me , I love Moopsy . Team Moopsy forever . We need Moospy plushies . I also really love episode 9 with Ma’ah . I finger like that ’s such a dependable use of a Klingon . It goes from them fight to them commit in each other . I also really love the instalment " cave . " Oh my God ! 408 , where everyone ’s just telling cave stories . It ’s such a trope . It ’s such a delightful Star Trek image of like , all these f***ing caves look the same . And you know , there ’s always some pull about the caves and comms are always out in a cave . I love Mariner ’s business where she ’s like , " Centuries of engineering science is no match for a bunch of rocks and rubble . " It ’s so shady to me . And now I ’m like , I want to drop a line my own caves installment .

Tawny Newsome : Just that it ’s a raw side of Starfleet . It ’s a new side of Star Trek , which I think you may deduce from the claim . We just have n’t seen this exact area . And I call up that we ’re just leaning into that . And again , I ca n’t say enough about the multitude in the room . The squad is maybe my favored part of the problem , because everyone is so , so great . And I find like I ’ve just made such expectant friend in that way .
What ’s next for Lieutenant Mariner inLower Decksseason 5 ? Is she getting more comfortable with the extra spot ?
Tawny Newsome : Yes , I think she is finding way to take the publicity and take the newfound responsibility but still be Mariner . Like , she ’s not going to on the spur of the moment be a buttoned - up prescript follower . I mean she ’s come up way to tug back in less intentionally rash room . But you know , she ’s still a small snatch of a chaos goon .
Mike also say that Orion is still in sport and Tendi ’s tale will continue . There ’ll be a peck more Orion stuff , which is amazing . I ca n’t believe your show is the first to reallydevelop the Orions in 57 years .
Tawny Newsome : It ’s something I talk about all the prison term , that our show is one of the principal shows that is really building on Orion canyon . And it ’s in a substantial way , so that [ with ] the other appearance I have to be like , " Do they all know that ? We did this in Lower Decks . " Or let ’s flag that Lower Decks has said X about the Orions . Let ’s check that everyone ’s really paying attention to that because it ’s a important canyon addition .
