Warning : contains spoilers for IDW ’s ongoingStar TrekseriesA new chapter has begin for the world ofStar Trek , finally bringing an aien terror to life that buff have been waiting for years to see . But consort to the teller , the long - wait unveiling of the mysterious Tzenkethi will put up more than the heroes dicker for .
writer Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly , who helped mastermindthis year’sDay of Bloodcrossoverwith Christopher Cantwell , will be rejoin for the book ’s 2d year . Joining Lanzing and Kelly for the record book ’s unexampled electric arc , titled " Glass and Bone , " is mavin artist Marcus To . To was benignant enough to sit down withScreenRantand lecture about his beginnings with the dealership , as well as what fans can expect from the book ’s new plot line .
Screen Rant : Everyone has a story about how they became aStar Trekfan . What is yours ? Were there any episodes / appearance / movies / character reference that really influenced your love ofTrek ?
Marcus To : I candidly experience intoTrekmostly on my own . I add up to it from mostly watchingVoyagerwhen it was on television . I loved the flair at the time and want more . But when it was released for streaming was really when I got into it full steam . There were so many instalment that acquire me , such asThe Next Generation- “ The Drumhead”,Deep Space Nine- “ Trials and Tribble - ations ” andVoyager- “ Lineage . ” I think of I can go on and on .
What I loved aboutStar Trekwas the message that we can fulfil anything with ethics , skill and compassion ( Kirk - Spock - Bones )
SR : How did you come in to work onStar Trekwith Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly ?
MT : We can all give thanks Heather Antos for set up us together again . Heather and I have been talking about working together for so long and this was the staring situation .
SR : This is n’t your first time working with Lanzing and Kelly either , having collaborated onJoy Ride . What was it like work with them again ?
MT : I love Jackson and Collin , we ’ve stayed in contact for class – they came to my marriage in Canada . They are my favorite pardner , and I am so glad to be a part of the squad again .
SR : Joy Ridewas a Lord - own claim , with all the freedom that comes with that . What was it similar to switch gears and work on a licensed place likeStar Trek ?
MT : Joy Ridewas our sexual love letter to theStar Trekstyle , occasional sci - fi which was a dream to collaborate with Jackson and Collin on . Being on the actual property is a different experience but also a very rewarding one . To have even a lowly home in the history of makingTrekis something that I am very blest to be involved in .
SR : On that note , Lanzing and Kelly have saidStar Trekwas an influence onJoy Ride . How did that book prepare you for drawingStar Trek ?
MT : I think , art wise , they have very unlike mindsets . WithJoy Rideit was like baby-sit around with your friends making up an intact universe of possibilities . When you work on a licensed property you have to work within the parameters of the world which has a rich history already . Both are very fun exercises . WithTrek , since I have watched and scan so many retiring stories , I matte at home with how I matte up like the fictional character would move , emote and turn . I believe I was devise for this task for year .
SR : What variety of research did you have to do before working onStar Trek ?
MT : I watched and rewatched every episode ofTrekand read many of the books , so you could say I have been researching for the last ten or so .
But in all distressfulness , drawing similitude has always been a struggle for me , so pouring through images of the actors such as Avery Brooks and Gates McFadden was something I have been doing for every offspring . It ’s been a peachy learning experience draw from actual lifespan photos and screenshots and how to draw different people .
Tom Paris served for seven seasons as Voyager ’s pilot , but now Star Trek has let on him to be one of the deadly piece in Starfleet , and the galaxy .
The Tzenkethi Are Finally Taking Shape in Star Trek Canon
SR : This arc involve the Tzenkethi , an oftentimes - note but never understand race in theStar Trekuniverse . moreover , almost all that survive about them is in fan lore and media tie - Immigration and Naturalization Service . This make them kind of a blank ticket – did you have any say in designing this unequaled raceway ?
MT : The crew and I had long talk over what we wanted to do with them . Heather , Jackson , and Collin had a meanspirited estimate of what they need the look of the Tzenkethi to be and what their world would front like , and we had a clustering of back and away discussions while I was sketching them initially . I hope the buff can enjoy the work we put into them to make them sense like a part of the world of Trek .
SR : Thedescriptions of the Tzenkethi shipsare wild . Will we get to see these up near ?
MT : The ships have been quite intriguing to draw , they will be a key full stop in the story .
The never - seen Tzenkethi were first name in theDeep Space Nineepisode " The Adversary . "
SR : IDW’sStar Trekcomics are taking character from all embodiment of the dealership and bringing them together . You ’re thread a lot of them in this arc , but are there any characters that you would like to work on , but did n’t get a hazard to here ?
MT : The Ferengi . I have been a huge Ferengi fan sinceDeep Space Nine . I have yet to draw them , but I go for to one day . Second is the Cardassians .
SR : What ’s next for Marcus To ? Any coolheaded projects you ’d like to sing about ? Anything elseTrek - connect on the sensible horizon ?
MT : At the moment , I am still finish off this arc onStar Trek , which I am relishing every moment with this creative squad . I do have another Word of God coming out in the spring with IDW calledKingdom Ridersthat I co - created with Shannon Eric Denton , that is a graphic novel about a exchange - type subspecies involving fantasy passenger upon mythical creature . I am also working on more God Almighty - possess stuff with my age group at the RAID studios . The originative geartrain never stops .
